Cultus - Hymns of Descending

Second album from this Dutch one-man band playing some really neat raw atmospheric black metal. The songs are quite long and repetitive giving it a hypnotic feel; the vocals are sparsely used and the production is quite raw and thin creating a noisy wall that fits perfectly with the repetitive song-writing. A great release!

Kyprian's Circle - Noitatulen Vartija

Excellent ep from this forgotten Finnish act with Nazgul of Satanic Warmaster on vocals. The release features mostly mid-paced black metal reminiscent of early Diaboli; the synths are really tastefully played and add a special feel to the release with the vocals just being sugar on top, I really enjoy Nazgul’s vocals. A nice little gem of Finnish black metal, recommended!

Limbonic Art - Live In La Laiterie, Strasbourg, France (video)

rare live footage from Limbonic Art from back in '00, the quality is a bit shitty, but I think fans will appriciate it!

Nocte Obducta - Nektar Teil I & II

Two huge releases from one of Germanys finest bands. Incredibly well written black metal with atmospheric and progressive elements; the songs are usually quite long and things seldom get too repetitive, always shifting and flowing in their own direction. Remarkable albums!

Drowning the Light - A Pact with Madness

I haven’t listened to this band ever since their debut Drowned, that I actually enjoy. I still see that the production is as shitty as ever; on first listen everything seems so amateurish, but for some reason I kept listening to it and everything just made sense, except the first song I just can’t seem to digest. The music at times seems chaotic, but is actually quite atmospheric and the production really adds to the abysmal mood of the album. Make your own mind about this one, in my opinion this is a mandatory raw black metal album!

Caïna - self titled ep

Really dig this release, unlike the latest releases that are a bit more experimental this one is more in the vein of the older material, there are still the beautiful post-rock elements but with a bit more rawness to it.

Darkspace - Dark Space III

A description here is really not needed, but for those who’ve been living under a rock the last couple of years Darkspace play some of the best atmospheric black metal around; the music is at the same time chaotic, epic and bleak... Pure brilliance!!

Zemial - I Am The Dark

New 7" ep with two songs; the first one is slightly more straightforward and quite thrashy while the second song is pure brilliance in true Zemial form!

Remmirath - Polis Rouge

Debut album from this Slovakian band. Excellent “post-black metal”, the songs feature some great progressive playing, clean interludes as well as some psychedelic electronic parts; the black metal parts sometimes remind me of Negura Bunget, especially in the first part of the album; the production is crystal and a special note should go to the bass that sounds particularly good.
A strong release, very impressive for a debut, I’m expecting big things from these guys in the future!

Pantheon - Paganuclear

Continuing where they left off with Aryan Rebirth, this album packs seriously awesome songs and again the song-writing is of the highest quality; the album is filled with energetic songs, but also features some slower parts that are just as enjoyable. Extremely recommended!
Also, be sure to check out some of the utterly ridiculous song titles on the album.

Malveillance - Que la mort vous emporte

Debut album from ’03 from a band that needs little introduction. Minimal repetitive black metal, the songs are much longer in comparison to his more d-beat punk recent material but are nevertheless just as good; actually this release is quite similar to Akitsa. Good stuff!

De Magia Veterum - Migdal Bavel

Side project from the guy behind Gnaw Their Tongues, new album. Chaotic raw black metal, dynamic fast paced songs with a raw edge; there are also some really awesome keyboards amidst all the chaos that really add to the atmosphere. Also reminds me a bit of Trayen. Incredibly enjoyable album, highly recommended!!

Creeping - Funeral Crawl

Exeptional debut from ’07 by this New Zealand band. Creeping play badass rockin’ black metal mixed with doom; the songs have a great flow, going from pure bm riffing to some greasy stoner riffs, needless to say, it sounds fucking awesome!!

Beatrìk - Journey Through the End of Life

I think this release doesn’t need much introduction; excellent doom laden black metal, some great songs on this one! It took me a long time to really dig this release, being a huge Tenebrae in Pereptuum fan, this always felt like the weaker younger brother, but once I stopped comparing the two I found this release incredibly captivating listen!

I still think Tenebrae in Perpetuum eats this for breakfast…

Forgotten Winter - Dialéctica Transcendental

Debut album from this Portugese band playing symphonic / atmospheric black metal. The album is quite enjoyable with lots of great melodic riffs, the keyboards sound really good with the metal passages, unfortunately the ambient parts sometimes just don’t work and seem a bit tedious. The band shows potential and apart from the extensive interludes this album is a great piece of symphonic black metal!

A Forest of Stars - The Corpse of Rebirth

Fucking love this album, the archives label this as psychedelic black metal, I really don’t see the psychedelic part except maybe the vocals in some parts; this is basically an incredibly well written album, pure excellence from start to finish, simple as that!

Agatus - Dawn Of Martyrdom

The classic ’94 debut from this Hellenic band. This album is a bit more straightforward then their second effort but just as enjoyable; excellent memorable riffs, amazing use of keyboards and overall great song-writing. Simply can’t go wrong here, essential!

Liturgy - Renihilation

Holy shit what a release! Debut from this new US band. An amazing album, buzzing and dissonant guitar-work with perfect drumming all coated in a great raw sound; the vocals are a bit low in the mix adding to the bleakly chaotic nature of the music. The song-writing is extremely unique while at the same time being pure black metal. Can’t recommend this enough, best bm release this year in my opinion!

Merrimack - Grey Rigorism

New album from this French horde! Some nice, well-played, extremely unoriginal satanic black metal with great production. This album reminds me of Glorior Belli’s second album. Anyway, great stuff, if you don’t mind the unoriginality.
